Ok so we are a little biased, but New England in the summer is a pretty awesome place to spend a long weekend, this is our guide on the best way to spend a weekend in New England.
Friday morning head straight to Newport RI. Newport in only 1hr 30min from Boston, Four hours from New York City and two hours from Hartford CT. Newport and surrounding areas has many choices when in comes to accommodation, if you are looking to spoil yourself in Newport nothing beats the Vanderbilt Grace . We also really love Guilded and Attwater hotels, great staff and funky designs. If you are up for an adventure you can camp in Jamestown RI at Fort Getty this place has the most amazing sunset view.
Spend your first day in Newport relaxing and window shopping, book yourself a sunset cruise in Newport harbor on one of our many charter, you have Sailboats, Schooners, 12 Meter sailboats, classic motorboats, lobster boats, modern motorboats and private charters to choose from. Honestly every boat in Newport does an amazing job,you just have to pick the boat that is right for you.For dinner checkout Broadway, it is off the tourist path with some of the best food in town. If you are into oysters try a few different types while you are in Newport, our favorites are Matunuck Oysters, and Watch Hill oysters, they are local and delicious.
Saturdays are for enjoying! Grab a coffee and head for Mystic CT, take scenic route 1A and you can stop along the way for breakfast and a swim at Narragansett beach. Once in Mystic I like stop for a snack, depending if we arrive for breakfast or lunch, we usually go to either Lis Bake Shop, she has awesome pastries and a few lunchy items. Or we go to Engine Room they serve brunch, lunch and dinner. It's got a southern- meets New England kind of vibe and we love it. Interesting burgers, homemade french onion dip, mac and cheese, farm to table without being pretentious. Try the smoked chicken wings. I also love to hit up the thrift shop Pennywise has some amazing designer buys and some seriously retro fun fashion.
Post- shopping I am ready to relax, and the best way I can think of is a Mystic private cruise on the Mystic River. Boats Cruises leave from Mystic Seaport and you have three private boat options to choose from, you can even go on a sunset cruise. I prefer a 1hr 45min afternoon cruise with a bottle of bubbly, it is BYOB so you can have exactly what you want.
The river is beautiful and there are so many houses and boats to check out before you know it you are back at Mystic Seaport . I like to walk through the Seaport and check out the boats, there are historical reenactments and a working shipyard.
After a super fun boat cruise, in Mystic We head back to newport in the later afternoon and usually get dinner in Jamestown, the restaurants are great and you can usually get in anywhere even on a saturday without a reservation. Great way to end a busy day
Sundays are for relaxing on the beach. Get your beach stuff together, grab some breakfast to go from Scratch , get an uber and go to the locals beach Rejects. It is at the very end of the cliffwalk, plan on spending the day it is a small beach with plenty of people watching and some of the clearest water in Newport.
I hope you enjoy your Weekend as much as we do! Happy Sailing
